About Us
In February 2018, a small group of concerned citizens came together determined to take meaningful action on climate change. We chose to focus on cutting needless plastic waste because of its unmistakable link to fossil fuels—99% of all plastic is made from fossil fuels, and the fossil fuel industry plans to triple plastic production by 2060. Beyond its massive carbon footprint, plastic pollution inflicts staggering harm on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Plastics break down into microplastics that contaminate our food, water, and even the air we breathe—particles that have been found in human blood and organs, posing serious risks to our health. Single-use plastic foodware was an obvious and urgent target: it’s a problem everyone recognizes, littering our streets, waterways, and a county that borders the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.
We set out a strategy that began with enacting a county ordinance that would form the foundation to change a system that had evolved to a normalization of single-use plastic foodware. The “Reusable Foodware Ordinance” was adopted by all of Marin County by November 2023.
Our next big audacious goal is to educate Marin on the importance of REUSE focusing on Bring Your Own cups and containers to takeout food/drink businesses & farmers markets throughout the county as further opportunity to displace single-use waste.
